the separatists

"these people, living at the fringes of the forest, had passed through the centuries self sufficient and relatively unchanged. they brought their vegetables, craftwork, and music to market, amusing the city folk with their mysterious clothing, and ways of speech. the spirit that sustained them grew all around in the light of the sun and under the rain rolling over the hills and into the sea. the leaders in the communities of these people were healers and teachers whose gift was signified by the keeping of a luminescent glass orb called the jewel. the jewel was unveiled at the harvest of gatherings of music and play to signify the connection of each being to every moment of creation. watching the sunrise and set, tending to their gardens, and keeping cooperative communion with neighborly wild creatures, the Separatists were beyond the reach of any king."
